Dr. Joel Gregory is one of Southern Baptist's greatest preachers of our day. He preached a sermon one time entitled the “Dark Night of the Soul” and I've never forgotten that title.
First, it speaks of the "soul" and not the "spirit." The soul is our mind, emotions, will.
Tonight at 6:10, we will be preaching from Job 3 which one of the darkest chapters in all the Bible. The only other one that would even come close to it would be the Gospel account of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane – but Jesus was experiencing that with hope for our salvation and that makes it lighter than this dark episode.
